The problem with this logic is that it ignores the enormous value to the volunteer of volunteering. Volunteering is the best and most effective way of piercing the bubble that all wealthy people live in every minute of every day, and of giving such people a gut-level understanding of the problems the charity is trying to solve.

As with many high-flying IPOs, however, Zipcar never fulfilled its promise, and its stock never again saw those heady first-day levels. By the end of 2012, its market capitalization had fallen to $330 million, while Avis Budget's market cap was $2.1 billion - making an acquisition both easy and obvious. In the alone, Zipcar stock fell by 40% while Avis stock rose by 60%:

But he's not a stock-picker, or even, really, a hedge-fund manager: he just plays one on TV.

"The savings rates are going down in Canada, our debt levels are going up, and that's really unusual, considering our demographic," he explained. "We have an aging population and actually as you get older, you tend to spend a little bit less and save a bit more for retirement, but we're not doing that."
