| | Those campaigning for the full Leveson will snort that this is to smear the victims and insult their great work on behalf of a better press. Yet these would be the same people who have happily misrepresented what is being proposed by the industry and David Cameron with a dishonesty that ought to earn them a referral to the PCC. In fact, the Hacked Off operation, and the support it has won from Labour and Lib Dems, is to be admired for the ruthlessness with which it has pursued its objective. It is being attacked precisely because it is so dangerously effective. Anyone hoping the Tories might win in 2015 should ponder the success with which their enemies have organised themselves and exploited the divisions on the Tory benches. When this is all over we will end up with a system of press regulation that will be the most draconian of anywhere in the free world. The Americans will be gobsmacked by it; in Moscow, Harare and wherever else we like to lecture about freedom they will have a laugh. But what Conservatives should be smart enough to recognise is that, whatever they think of Rupert Murdoch, or the Mail, or the exposure of MPs' expenses, voting with Hacked Off weakens the cause of freedom and advances the political interests of the left.Tobias Ellwood has brought forward - or Berlin time as Peter Hitchens prefers it. The Government has agreed to give the case for changing the national time zone parliamentary time, which is a big step. Supporters of the idea claim to detect a shift in their favour at Westminster. Certainly what was previously a specialist subject for those who are passionate about it (honourable mention: Tim Yeo) is going mainstream. Mr Ellwood's study - time to Change the Clocks - argues that if we put the clocks forward an hour permanently, we would get an extra 235 hours of extra daylight after work every year. Next week MPs debate the Rebecca Harris Bill, and David Cameron has suggested he is open minded about this one. |
