I don't think I necessarily thought about what I was doing as much as there was a mental checklist, and these things needed to be checked off so we could do these things. What we needed to do that day was to end the ambush, and what did we have to do to do that? But that comes from training, which does make it more instinctual. I didn't have any reservations about what I was doing. I remember maybe flashes in my mind of just thinking: crap, crap, crap, crap, crap. But you don't think: I'm going to die. There's no time to think about [whether] I'm going to die, just crap. This is bad. To do what needed to be done. The near ambush is something that is trained at the basic training level in the military. We do these things so that we can be prepared for them. When you look at them in basic training, they say that 75 percent casualties is an acceptable casualty rate. It really makes you not want to be in a near ambush. But when it happens, it's good that you trained for it. You already knew what had to happen because we talked about it, we've ran through it, we've practiced.
