"One day, while thinking about what I could make for my first major one-person show, at the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, I went to a scrap merchant where I saw a skip full of mangled pewter and silver objects including a whole load of damaged teapots. I thought: thats nice. Here were these flawed objects with pretensions to grandeur, but something horrible had happened to them, so they were brought down to earth. At the same time, I was interested in photographs released by HM Customs and Excise that showed fake Rolex watches being squashed by a steamroller. They reminded me of Tom and Jerry cartoons, when a steamroller would come along and squash something flat. So I decided to hire a steamroller and squash some silver plate. I laid out the silver in a long line as a little nod to Richard Longs A Line Made by Walking, a black-and-white photograph in the Tate of a line he had made by walking across a field full of daisies. I loved the idea that you could make an artwork just by having your feet in some daisies. Since Thirty Pieces of Silver, I have squashed lots of objects, including brass musical instruments. I suppose I must get some perverse pleasure out of seeing things flattened. I like the idea of taking three-dimensional objects and making them two-dimensional, so that they look like cartoons."
