TV producers usually copy the wrong, or at any rate the most irrelevant, things. A few years ago, I was researching interview-based programmes and was struck by how every country seemed to have a Letterman lookalike, dressed in something like his jacket and tie, with a cup of coffee in hand and a view of their cityscape at the back of the set. But unfortunately not always equipped with a team of top writers and a stream of top guests. Or even a host with a sense of humour.
