It was not just that we enjoyed a higher standard of living than most of our friends at home. Very many of us were NATO trained ex-military pilots who had flown similar military aircraft and then very similar civil ones along the same routes. We stayed in similar (or the same) hotels, meeting in the restaurants and bars to exchange our thoughts on the shortcomings of air traffic control, weather forecasting, and airfields along the routes we flew.
