HSBC flash PMI, the earliest indicator of China's industrial activity, rose to a four-month-high at 49.7 in February from 48.8 in January. The PMI has been below 50, which demarcates expansion from contraction, for most of the last eight months.

The IGP stated that 56 policemen had been martyred since January till March 31, at an average of 18 to 20 cops killed per month. Another Rs120 million are required to meet the future compensation expenditures in the next three months.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 3.80 points, or 0.02 percent, at 15,244.32. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 1.14 points, or 0.07 percent, at 1,642.24. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 2.75 points, or 0.08 percent, at 3,466.47.
