Since the president has to meet the same qualifications for election as a member of the National Assembly, there is no reason why presidential candidates should also not be required to submit the same information in their nomination forms. This is even more important for the highest office of the state which, after the 18th Amendment, derives its authority mainly from the moral stature of the incumbent. This matter was also taken up by this writer in two letters addressed to the CEC ?C without any result. It is typical of our brand of democracy that none of the political parties has called for a scrutiny of the presidential candidates in light of criteria spelt out under the constitution, not even of the phoney kind that was showcased for election to the assemblies.
